Reading & watching- A Death in the Family: My Struggle Book 1 (Karl Ove Knausgaard 2009, translated Don Bartlett 2012) 20 May 2013My next Book Group book, which I hope to have read before hearing Karl Ove Knausgaard speak at the Sydney Writers' Festival in six days' time.
- Linen Tough as History (Julie Chevalier 2012) 20 May 2013From the poet who wrote Darger: his girls.
- Griffin Theatre: The Bull, the Moon and the Coronet of Stars (Van Badham 2013) 18 May 2013Apart from the casual homophobia, a version of 'love' that consists mostly of sexual objectification and the assumption that a group of older women doing something creative is inherently amusing (particularly odd given the average age of the audience today), this is mildly enjoyable and in the last ten seconds feels as if it touches something real.
- Advance: Smash Season 2 (Theresa Rebeck 2013) 18 May 2013It's a marvel and a wonder how an entertaining show can nosedive as dramatically as this does in the first two episodes of the second season.
- The Reluctant Fundamentalist (Mira Nair 2012) 15 May 2013This was a free screening put on by The Monthly. I don't remember the book very clearly at all, but my impression is that this is much more complex. It's richly layered, and challenging, and full of excellent performances.
